Research assessments

Every six years, the quality and societal relevance of research at the Protestant Theological University are assessed by an external committee of experts.

Period 2018 - 2023

In 2024 the research conducted in the period 2018 - 2023 was assessed by a committee chaired by Dr. George van Kooten, Lady Margaret's Professor of Divinity at the University of Cambridge and consisting of the following experts in the fields of theology, open sience and relevance to society strategies:

  • Prof Nadine Bowers du Toit, Professor in Theology and Development, Faculty of Theology, Stellenbosch Theology
  • Dr Yves De Maeseneer, Associate Professor Fundamental Theological Ethics, Faculty of Theology and Religious Studies, Katholieke Universiteit Leuven
  • Dr Martine Veldhuijzen, Assistant Professor of Dutch language, Faculty of Humanities, Utrecht University
  • Rieneke Brand MA, PhD candidate, Nijmegen School of Management, Radboud University

The committee was assisted by independent secretary Dr Leonie van Drooge.

The framework for the assessment was provided by the Strategy Evaluation Protocol (SEP 2021-2027), issued by the Universities of the Netherlands (UNL), the Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research (NWO), and the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences (KNAW).

  • Period 2012 - 2017

    In 2018 the research of the PThU in the period 2012 - 2017 was assessed by a committee chaired by Prof. James Kennedy, Professor of Modern Dutch History and Dean of University College Utrecht and consisting of the following experts in the fields of biblical, systematic and practical theology:

    • Prof. Stephan van Erp, Professor of Systematic Theology and the Study of Religions, KU Leuven, Belgium
    • Prof. Jaco Dreyer, Professor of Practical Theology, University of South Africa, Pretoria, South Africa
    • Prof. Jan Willem van Henten, Professor of Religion, University of Amsterdam, The Netherlands

    The committee was assisted by independent secretary Dr. Chris Mollema.
