Meeting: 'Debating the Relationship between Slavery and Racism in South Africa and the Dutch Colonial Empire'

The research project “Church and Slavery in the Dutch Empire: History, Theology and Heritage” organizes a meeting and debate on slavery and racism in South Africa and the Dutch colonial empire. This meeting will be held on Wednesday 26 March. Guest of honor is the project’s new visiting researcher Jacob Boersema.

About the speaker

Jacob Boersema teaches at New York University and is a Fellow at the Cultural Sociology Center at Yale University. He is a sociologist and historian who does research on race and racism in the US, Europe and South Africa. He obtained his PhD at the University of Amsterdam and previously was a postdoc at Rutgers University and a lecturer at Columbia University. His first book, Can We Unlearn Racism? What South Africa Teaches Us About Whiteness, was published with Stanford University Press. He is currently working on his new book on the history of racism in the Dutch empire.

Programme

The programme for the meeting is as follows:

  • 14.00-14.30: Dr. Jacob Boersema (New York University/ Yale University): “Dutch Racism and the Debate about Slavery in South Africa in the 19th Century. Abraham Kuyper, Dutch Missionaries, and Settler Colonialism in South Africa (1850-1890)”
  • 14.30-15.00:  Dr. Gert van Klinken (Protestant Theological University): “Bible, Roman Law, and Enlightenment. Discussing Slavery at the Cape, 1825”
  • 15.00-15.30: Coffee/tea break
  • 15.30-16.30: Plenary discussion/debate on the basis of statements (‘stellingen’)
  • 16.30-17.00: Drinks

Time and place

This meeting will take place in the Augustinuszaal of the Theological University Utrecht (Plompetorengracht 3, Utrecht) from 14.00 to 17.00 CET. Participating online is possible as well.
