Webinar Afro-Atlantic Catholics: America's first Black Christians

25 February 2025 15:30

Black Christianity in America has long been studied as a blend of indigenous African and Protestant elements. In a lecture on 25 February, Jeroen Dewulf shows that this approach is incorrect.

About the lecture

Dewulf argues that African Catholics had a huge impact on the historical development of Black Christianity in America during the seventeenth century, not the least in the former Dutch colonies in the Americas, such as Curaçao and New Netherlands.

The lecture will be moderated by Prof Dr Rose Mary Allen of the University of Curaçao.

This webinar is an initiative of the NWO research project Church and Slavery in the Dutch Colonial Empire.
